Fat Lip

Photobucket
Andrew put his arms in his vest today at Walmart and then tripped and couldn't stop himself from hitting the back of the cart. He cried a lot but when I looked he only had a small small cut on his lip so I gave him a hard time about all the crying. He sat in the cart and kept crying for the next ten minutes all the while with me and Elijah telling him it wasn't that big of a deal. I think I even said, "Andrew! Do you need to go to the hospital?!" To which he sadly replied, "No." So I answered, "Then quit CRYING!" Finally I stopped the cart and decided to take another look. I lifted his lip to see a big black bloody bruise on the inside and within a few minutes he had this fat lip. Poor Andrew with a mean mommy.
Maybe instead of Superman he should be a boxer for Halloween.

Jumping on the band wagon...

Kristi emailed out some pics from high school and a few of you have been posting them so I thought I'd post the ones she sent me...as always, they make me look way cool.
That's Chris on top, Kristi in the middle and me on the bottom. My kids said, "Who's that!? " And I said, "Who do you think it is?" Andrew said, "Grandma!" and Elijah said, "I think it's Weston." Yup, I agree.I thought that hat was sweet. I bought it at Craft's Etc. and thought it made me look french or something. It's one of those hats you're supposed to put silk flowers on and hang on the wall. I.am.a.fashion.goddess.
This is in the parking lot on my first trip to a club. I'm the man in the middle. I wanted a boyfriend soooo desperately and for some reason couldn't get one. Why didn't someone take me under their wing and help me be a girl like they do in movies? And here's me dancing inside the club. HOT! HOT! HOT! I'm one in a million, eh? At least I was here - I'm the only one really dancing. This is church at Chris's farewell - check out all the leg. And Lins - those are some amazing huge white shoes. And...two cardigans. Awesome.
But this is my favorite. Did I even have a hairstyle? It looks like "teenaged boy in the morning" - oh well. And if you click on it to see it bigger you can see evidence that Marisa is totally plastered. No, not really. Also, notice my sweet shoes. I bought those at Walmart in the men's section. They were vinyl shower shoes. Once this popular girl at school(Kelly Forrester) looked at them and was like, "My grandpa has shoes like that." And yet, I thought, "Poor girl, she is soo not up on fashion like me." Really, I thought that. I'm not kidding.

And yet, somehow through it all I kept thinking I was cool. I had a self esteem of steel.

You believe in what?...

This post contains a lot about my beliefs. And while I love to share that, I am in no way an official spokesperson for my church so I could be wrong about some things. That's my official disclaimer...

A lot has been on my mind lately - I'd bet it's the same for many of you. You can't turn on the television without so many issues bombarding you or read the mail without some new study coming out changing the way we see things. I check the news on google and at first I'd read about some study on this or that which said, "Everything we once thought is not true!" and the article would proceed to tell me I must change my diet completely or my belief system! But then a few weeks or months later another study comes out to say the opposite. And I tend to think, "These times are crazy - it was so much easier to live at such and such a time." But really it wasn't - life has always been and always will be VERY complicated. It's just that hind sight on history simplifies it because we are able to see the outcomes and the final word on many ideas and events.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints(I know, I'm getting religious...) I have a belief that God has always had a way to lead his children if they would listen. Just like the children of Israel, enslaved in Egypt, looking for a leader to guide them out of their oppression - we are looking for someone to guide us through the many issues of our time. And God always had the same way of taking care of his children. In the time of the flood he sent Noah. After that it was Moses, Daniel, Isaiah, and prophet after prophet. He always sent a prophet to lead his people because he loved them. He wanted people to know about the flood or the coming of his Son - one to whom could through His grace save them from all problems. And I don't think he changed his way of thinking on that. I believe that we have a modern prophet leading us and guiding us the very same way. I am so grateful that as I struggle and ponder and pray, I also have a man who has been called of God to lead and guide us away from confusion and keep us going in the right direction. Crazy, eh?

If you want to know some of the things the leaders of my church have to say on the current hot topics you can go to the church newsroom. It's a site for media and others to get our official views on topics such as gay marriage, etc.

I also thought many of you would be totally unfamiliar with the idea of following a prophet - perhaps even a little weirded out so I thought I'd have a little FAQ section:
1.)Who is the current prophet? While I believe that Joseph Smith was the first prophet on the earth in a long time - since the apostles were killed in New Testament times - I believe he was the first in a long line of men called to act in that capacity. The current man is Thomas S. Monson. You can click here to read the wikipedia entry on him.

2.) Is the prophet married? Is he paid for the position? First off, yes they are married and they usually spend most of their lives as normally as the rest of us - sometimes as doctors, lawyers, scientists, etc. Second, no, he isn't paid. If you didn't know it - we have no paid clergy in our church - we are all serving in different positions that are constantly changing. Like Mike's brother is currently the Bishop of his ward - which is essentially the pastor of a congregation. And he keeps his day job. Leaders of our church are typically called later in life to serve in higher positions in the church until ultimately they are called as the President of the Church - or Prophet.

3.) So every time he opens his mouth and speaks is that considered the word of God? No, not at all. The prophet is a completely normal man - albeit a good man. Which means that he is far from perfect. The only perfect person to ever be on earth is Jesus Christ. And though we believe that the prophet's calling is to lead us to Christ - he still is not perfect. But he does speak with that authority sometimes - just as in days on old. Those times would be in conference - which is a meeting held twice a year that is broadcast to all of the members of the church. And sometimes the church releases church declarations that are agreed upon and sustained by the prophet and his two counselors, as well as the quorum of the twelve apostles(yes we've got those too - we believe in the same organization the Jesus set up when he came to the earth.) And also, every month there is a church magazine which has an article from a member of the first presidency of the church - the prophet or his two counselors. Click here to read the current article.

4.)What about the Bible...isn't that enough? The scriptures are a gift from God to guide us on a daily basis and the counsel of our leaders should never contradict the words found in them. But as many of us are now feeling, they didn't talk about everything as specifically as we need in our day. We still need guidance and leadership to make sure those books are interpreted correctly and that the issues facing us are addressed directly.

5.) It's still kind of weird though...C'mon a prophet? I know, but no weirder than religion has ever been. No more strange than to believe a Man - who was the Son of God, came to earth and died for me. And then came back to life. And in so doing made it possible to be freed from the bondage of sin, sorrow, and ultimately death itself. Right? And in the end I believe what it says in the new Testament - that if you want to know something - you have got to ask God. And that He will tell you in your mind and in your heart what is true. I put a lot of things to that test in my life - especially my faith. This is a great summary of how that whole thing works on that newsroom page.

So, there you have it. Now you know a little bit more about us weird mormons, eh?

I used some Brian Kershisnik paintings without official permission- there's that word again. But he is a great artist and I love his stuff.

New Big Idea

So for a while I've had the dream of someday Mike and I serving as missionaries together once he has retired. And I wanted to stay really healthy so we could go on this really hardcore mission to somewhere far away. I was always hoping for Africa. Well, I've got my dream plan now. I want to be missionaries in Africa who ride motorcycles to villages to bring them medicine and what not. And I didn't make that up - people really do that. So now I've got to get good at riding motorcycles and make sure I stay in shape. Wouldn't that be the greatest?

Martha's Spicy Pumpkin Seeds

I've had a lot of pumpkin seeds over the years - I'm always trying to get them to taste good enough to get my kids to eat them. I just hate throwing them out! I've done sweet and salty but it wasn't until these spicy ones from Martha Stewart's Great Fast Food that everyone signed on board. AND they are super easy...

1 cup raw pumpkin seeds
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt(i used regular)
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice (this is the real kicker - don't omit!)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients and toss to coat. Spread on a rimmed backing sheet; bake until puffed and browned, about 10 minutes. (I actually had to bake for like 25 minutes - testing in between. The key is to get them nice and toasted so they are crunchy - not chewy.)

And enjoy!

FHE

Last night for family home evening we did what I expect many of you did - carved pumpkins. First off, it's always a lot harder to carve then you remember. I always have dreams of amazing pumpkins but by the end I'm just happy to have anything. Here are a few pics from the whole affair:
This year I let Elijah design his own pumpkin. I'm always in a toss up - will he be happier if we help and make it look better of if it's all his own? I thought his turned out pretty cute by the end so I guess it's time to let him loose.
That's my man - he did a lot of the cutting since he's so amazingly strong. This year was Andrew's year to opt out of taking the "guts" out of the pumpkin. He reached in and pulled out a few and was like, "I don't think I'll do this part." Elijah did the same thing a couple years back. Then you realize that's half the fun. At least for like two minutes and then it's just a big bother. Here's me - sans makeup or a hairdo. Looking HOT!
And here's the final results. I'm convinced that the best way to go is the classic way - Andrew's classic pumpkin on the bottom looks the best.

If you haven't met her yet...

Kristen Wigg is a gal from SNL and you need to watch for her alone. A lot of her skits are online at nbc.com. I think Kristen Wigg is the next Will Farrell. She is just so dang hilarious and I love everything she does. Here's a funny character she's got that just loves surprises...

And here she is as Judy Grimes - a nervous travel writer:

And here's one more silly one:

You're right Steph - I need to add one of those - here goes:

Brains!

When I told my seven year old about the project we were going to do and I showed him a picture all he had to say was, "That doesn't really look like a brain." Thanks son. I was hoping to win some big mom points with this one. And I was hoping that it would be a memory he'd keep so he'd think back and say, "My mom was cool. She did lots of fun things with us." Oh well. But it did seem to work on Andrew. He thinks it's mega-cool that we are eating brains for dinner - or dessert. If you were wondering it's a small watermelon. I saw this project on family fun and knew I had to do it. It was simple and it's brains! C'mon - I love brains, guts, and all that gross stuff. And I'm pretty excited to slice into the brain tonight as well. It's a cute idea, don't you think?

In search of sleep...

When I sleep I like my room dark. And I mean dark - no hall light coming under the door, no nightlight, no full moon through the window - not even the light from the alarm clock. So when we bought our first house I was so excited to be out of an apartment where the parking lot lights always shone in - only to discover that my weird neighbor had one of those motion detecting SPOTLIGHTS on the corner of their house - making it shine right in our window every time it went on. And that includes when they let their little dog out five times a night to use the bathroom - and it also includes the 8 million stray cats in their backyard, the raccoons, opossums, and who knows what else. And then once the boys were potty trained we had to leave the bathroom light on in case they needed to go. And if we didn't that would be the night some little boy would be screaming in the hall - lost without the light.

So, a few weeks I bought myself a sleep mask. I'd always seen these in movies and thought, "I want one of those," but I didn't ever come across one until I was at the local discount beauty supply and found this cheapie:
It's actually really great. I can still hear Mike getting up in the morning but the fact that he always forgets to close the door before he turns the bathroom light on no longer bothers me. And when I take a nap -I'm out. Last night Mike and I even tested it and he put it on while I turned the light off and on to see if he could tell - he didn't even know I'd turned it on when I'd been flashing it off and on. The only problem is that you have no gradual transition to morning. You go from dead asleep to bright bright sun in your room when the kids come in at 7 am. It's worth it though. I'd say it's just getting me one step closer to the dream of pre-children like sleep.

Bitter sweet

We just had the most wonderful weekend spent at Mike's parents house in Idaho. It was an excellent weekend filled with tomato harvesting, berry picking, and lots of relaxing. Elijah even announced that Friday was his best day ever. I wanted to go because I was literally sick of staring at the same four walls anymore - morning sickness is a drag. So we went and I couldn't believe the weight that was lifted by being a guest at someone else's house. I didn't have to worry about all of the tasks and chores. And Mike's parent's have a really dreamy place with a big beautiful lot. It was great. And so when the weekend was over I had to choose - either stay the week and have Mike return alone home. Or let the two oldest boys stay the week and me return with Mike. I can't tell you how many times I went back and forth with that decision.

I'm a boob - I don't like to be away from my man or my boys. I finally decided to stay but at the VERY last moment changed my mind and came home. Tomorrow is Mike's 30th birthday and I felt bad that he would be alone all week. I also thought I could get really organized again - early pregnancy is not one of my most organized times! But if I let myself think about chubby cheeks and sticky kisses - I can cry more than a little bit. I am going to have to keep myself busy this week so I don't miss them too horribly.

Does anyone else have that hard of a time being away from their kids? I know they are having a great time. In fact, when I told them I might go back to see how they would feel Elijah said, "I'll be ok Mom, but I'll miss you too." Andrew quickly added, "I won't miss you!" They're having a blast but I love those boys more than anything! I am rambling, aren't I? Anyhow, I miss my boys already and hope that I can make this week worth it.

And here are some images from a while back to keep me company until this weekend when their grandma brings them back to me.
