Fat Quarter Pillows

Last year we bought these couches and they came with the obligatory matching pillows. I knew then that I wanted to replace them but it has taken until now to do it. So when I saw the beautiful array of fat quarters at Corn Wagon I knew it was time. Now, I don't like the look of pillows made of plain old cotton - I think it looks thin and cheap but Marisa suggested I back the fabric with fusible fleece(iron on) and it worked - making it feel more like upholstery weight. The only thing I am not happy with is the size. Fat quarters look like the perfect size for a bigger pillow but I forgot about how much smaller they get when stuffed. Oh well, I'll have to make a couple bigger ones. The other thing is that I like the look of white pillows on a dark sofa but Mike pointed out that these just look like pillow forms instead of real pillows. He's right- they do. I think for white ones I will need a heavier fabric with some sort of textures or something to it and maybe make them larger. And the pillows are pretty homemade looking. Though all in all, I still think it looks better:
This is my favorite fabric. It was the last of the last of it in the store. I noticed while making these that they are in the color scheme I suggested several months ago and then chickened out of. I realized I had too much green to go with pink and yellow. I realized today that this pillow is the missing link between my stuff and those cute colors. You can't tell but that light color in the pillow is pink.

Another blog - how will I ever stay on top of this?

Oh well, I just decided I wanted to document this first year of homeschooling. I thought it might be interesting and it will also help me record what we are doing. So, if you'd like, you can go check it out here.

Did you know...

...that Walmart now carries Martha Stewart stuff and it is amazing? I happened to be passing through tonight - and saw these:
She has all of these different craft kits there with everything you need - no glue or scissors required. They range in price from $4.97 to $9.97 or something. I can't wait to show the boys - they are going to love them.

She also has some great wedding/party stuff too. I'm loving these paper lanterns- she also has some really pretty eyelet ones I want to hang in my bedroom.

Go check it out the next time you're selling your soul to Walmart. Which is pretty often for me...

Living the life we love...

Tomorrow school will start for most kids here in Springville but Elijah won't be going to public school this year. This year, he will be homeschooled.

Since Elijah was a baby I've wanted to homeschool, but up until this year I never had the confidence. It's been a desire that hasn't left me alone and so after a lot of of research and quite a bit of prayer - we think it is the right thing for our family.

I will be using several methods - focusing mostly on the charlotte mason method, with a little of this and a little of that. We belong to a local association of homeschoolers and will participate in their activites as well as some with a group we're currently putting together.

I have designed my own curriculum and am using this book as a help with that. I am sure we will be pulling in other curriculum throughout the year and figuring out how it's going to work for us as we go along.

In the end we are anxious and excited and a little scared, but I'm sure it will be a fun adventure for us all. I am still thinking of starting a blog dedicated to our homeschooling experience this year but I have a lot of blogs and don't want to start that just to see this one suffer. We'll see.

Eventually I hope to write a post dedicated to why we homeschool but I haven't taken that completely out of the abstract realm yet. I can say that I am not homeschooling out of fear or a desire to hide from the world. In many ways I hope our methods at home will actually give my kids more opportunity to interact with the community than public schooling gives them. In the simplest of terms we are homeschooling because it is part of living the life we love...

p.s. I didn't open this post for comments because I wanted to let everyone know what we're doing but I didn't want it to become a debate as to whether homeschooling is ok or not. Sorry!

fuzzy monsters

I want one of these. And in true mom fashion I ask, could I make it myself? You really need to click on that link and see what I'm talking about...you'll want one real bad too.

Catching up...

I haven't been posting for a while just because I got out of the habit but I thought I'd do some catch up of what's been going on here.
First off, for the fourth of July we went up to Boise and stayed at Mike's brother's house. We love going there because Mike's parent's street always does a parade with all of the families. And they make real floats and everything! Here's Elijah standing proud with his decorated bike.I love this one of Peter - he seems to be deeply considering our freedoms... Also, if you remember we were there last year and saw for the first time the amazing show put on by Mike's neighbor. He wears all black and gets his clothes soaking wet so that he can hold the fireworks - all in all, it's slightly napoleanesque. But the boys eat it up and think he is the coolest thing ever. I have to admit, it is pretty impressive.
We have been really happy here. It just feels right to be back in Utah. It feels like home. This is quintessential Andrew. He is so expressive. This was excitement over a rainbow. I know, Andrew, I love rainbows too.Last Tuesday we went up to Payson Lakes and it was a wonderful day. I know some of you said you wanted to come along but I didn't want to share the view of me in a swimsuit with any friends so...This is Mike hanging in the backyard. The weather has been really nice lately so we like to sit out there as much as possible. It gets old to look at pics of kids all the time so I thought I'd put this up here. And this is the view from our backyard. Maybe it's not much of a view to most of you but I love seeing even the tops of the mountains. This is from our trip to the Springville Art Museum yesterday. I have to admit that we are absolutely in love with this little town and if we end up moving closer to Salt Lake, it'll be hard to leave.Of course, Elijah was really interested in the machines...and Mike rockin' it with the baby bag. This is just priceless. And one more of our beloved Springville with a view of Timpanogos.

date night

Last night Mike and I went on a date. Because of our littlest one being only 3 months old, it had been a while since we had gone out together and it was very needful. And it ended up being the best date of my life.

I'm not sure if the curlers did anything that my hair doesn't normally do but they are so fun to wear. It just makes you feel like you're getting ready for something really special.

We had a heck of a time finding a babysitter. I got really desperate - I even tried calling every girl from Kingwood who is at BYU right now. In the end the first teen aged girl I called ended up working out. I'm so glad we have finally found someone who can babysit and that the baby stayed asleep the whole time she was here - I feel a new sense of freedom!

We headed up to Sundance Resort for a full moon lift ride. If you didn't know it, Sundance is Mike and I's favorite place in the world. And on nights with a full moon, they open the lift so you can ride up the mountain in the beautiful moonlight. I have to say it is incredibly relaxing and romantic, not to mention astoundingly beautiful. It was actually really chilly too which made it even better because we had to cuddle together. The ride takes about 45 minutes total. Luckily we brought some jackets because they were well used. Afterwards we went and had dessert at The Foundry Grill. Normally this restaurant is completely out of our price range but you can get desert for around 6 dollars. So we ate our delicious apple pie with salted caramel ice cream and brownie with cherry ice cream and cherry sauce.

Now, normally I would have taken pictures but I forgot my camera in the car and ended up being glad too. Sometimes it's nice to actually experience something rather than documenting it. Often I find that those two are not possible simultaneously. So instead here is an image I pulled from google for your viewing pleasure...

p.s. Sundance is doing a few more full moon rides this year if you wanted to go. We saw several people with blankets which is a really good idea.

How a business is born...

Putting together a photography business is probably easier than putting together other businesses - especially when you've already done it before but it can still be pretty laborious so I thought I'd share a little of the process of putting this one together.

When we decided to move from Texas I was sure I was done with professional photography. I was feeling burnt out and ready for a change. I think having a baby is a huge part of that. Marisa and I had talked about getting our studious together in the past but now I was done. After I moved in, I left for a reunion in Idaho. While I was there my sister in law was showing me portraits she had had taken and they were so cute. And then my friend Tyan started to really get into her photography and she was getting really good at it. And I started to feel the itch. Sometime around the 5th of July I called Marisa. I had had a change of heart and told her I wanted to do a business together - she was immediately on board and we started talking about the style we wanted and all that stuff. We knew a name would be really important so we spent the next ten days going back and forth about names. We thought of "m studio" since we're both "m" names but it seemed too stuffy. My parents suggested "phabulous photography" but that seemed a little too cheesy. After a few days we actually settled on:

lolo photography

We liked that for 2 or 3 days but then Marisa'a husband said he didn't see anything special about it and we agreed so we went back to the drawing boards. I looked up every single word for sisters/twins/best friends/etc. in every language and came up with pretty much nothing. I poured over mythologies from all over the world trying to find something that rang true to our style/personalities. I was truly exhausted of the process when finally one night I gave up and climbed into bed after midnight. I couldn't sleep as I tossed all sorts of names around in my head. I started thinking about what Marisa and I were like growing up and tried to think if there were any famous characters that were like us, "Betty Boop? No. Annie? No.......GIDGET! Yes!" Gidget is a tomboy who wants to do everything the boys do but at the same time she's always dreamily thinking about the boys...sound familiar? And right when I thought of Gidget "Moondoggie" came into my head. (If you've seen the old Gidget movie you might remember that Gidget was obsessed with a hot surfer who went by "moondoggie" . Throughout the movie Gidget is always sighing and saying, "Oh moondoggie...") And I knew I was in love with the name. I woke Michael up and told him the name and he sleepily said, "Ya, that's great." Though he didn't remember that the next morning. I still couldn't sleep so I went downstairs and googled it and saw that there were a few little companies like moondoggie coffee and what not but pretty much nothing bad out there. I was totally excited and hurriedly texted the name to Marisa and went to bed.

Marisa wasn't immediately taken by the name until she had some time to run it over in her brain. I explained that I thought it was fun, funky, playful, and totally memorable. I thought our work would fit right with all of that. She agreed and then we moved on to our logo. This is our first incarnation:
I like the font helvetica and I think it's cool and modern so we agreed on this for a while. But then there was the subject of what colors so we went over these choices....

We stayed with the pink and grey but then I started to yearn for more and thought maybe a different font...so we thought about changing it from one to another:
You might not see the difference between the two but the second seemed more youthful. But still after a couple days I was getting a little bored of this so I emailed this idea to Marisa:

Ugh! What a mess! Neither one of us liked this too much but it got our wheels turning...

No, not this....

And then this:

I loved it and Marisa did too except she wasn't too hot on the colors. We wanted it to be fun but vintage looking so we tried some other combos:Marisa liked them all and I liked none of them. We played around a little more and decided we liked the combo of pink and yellow. It seemed too poppy still so we distressed it a little and ended up here:
And thus we have a logo.

It then has taken weeks to get our site up and running. You wouldn't believe how long it takes to write bios/details/price lists/etc. but it seems to be finally wrapping up. So now we're up and running.

I am actually really glad I changed my mind about doing photography. I think all the difference has been giving up doing what I don't enjoy and only doing the style I want to. And it helps immensely to share the stress with Marisa. Thank goodness I got unlimited minutes when I moved up here because we have been on the phone 24/7. In the past when Marisa and I talked about doing a business together I was always a little apprehensive that if we did it would ruin our friendship. She didn't agree and I am glad she didn't because it's actually been great. We are just different enough to have our strengths and weaknesses compliment one another. We've done a few sessions together so far and it has been a blast. I can't wait to see how these next several months go....

Wish us luck!

Elijah's first crush

Elijah has officially fallen in love for this first time. This is our neighbor and he secretly(at least he thinks it's secretly) has a little crush. He blushed when she came out tonight all dressed for photos - this is one from the mini session we did tonight. I don't blame him - she's a cutie...even Andrew wants to marry her!

We're live!

Well, Moondoggie Photography is now up and going. It isn't completely done - we still have some work to do but it's a start! Go check it out!

Do you ever get in one of those moods where you seem to WANT to be angry? Where your brain has an exceptional ability to observe nasty things about other people and how to eloquently share them? I do and I've been in one for the past 24 hours or so. Poor Mike. (As I write that last statement my brain says, "Poor Mike!? Give me a break..." and so on and so forth.)

And no, it's not hormones - it just honest to goodness my own plain evilness.

i'm a nerd

and i can't wait!

p.s. spencer, have you still not seen harry potter? it's time to catch up.

seven is a good age

Happy 7th Birthday Elijah.

Elijah was our first born and like most first borns he was absolutely adored and given all of the attention for his first three and a half years. He was the first one to have the cute curly hair and to have all of the ladies in the ward in love with him. He was the first Mr. Cool with all the teenagers. And since he is such a sweet boy when his little brother Andrew came along he didn't mind sharing the limelight at all.

He's really smart, silly, and very kind hearted. He just wouldn't know how to say anything mean to anyone. When he grows up he wants to be an archaeologist or a geologist or a volcanologist.

I love you Elijah. It's a tough job being the oldest, but you are doing a really great job at it. I can't wait for all of the adventures we're going to have together.

Being 7 is great fun.

Scripture study lessons...

Andrew: "Who is the Holy Ghost?"

Mike: "He's like Heavenly Father and he helps you know that Jesus loves you."

Andrew: "Does he have powers?"

Mike: "Well, yes, he does."

Andrew: "Who does he fight?"

Mike: "Uhh..."

Why are my boys so violent?

T'he day I lost my camera...

I don't have any images of Elijah because he was way down the creek...
